- Event: Union officer Halbert E. Paine is jailed for refusing to return runaway slaves to slavers.

- Event: When the former commanding officer dies in battle, Halbert E. Paine is released from the brig to take command of the defense of Baton Rouge. He's ordered to burn the city to prevent the confederates from retaking it, and he refuses, and even rescues the library.
