- Event: The US Navy begins research on Project ELF, a plan to communicate with submarines using extremely low frequency waves. The plan is heavily shrouded in secrecy.
- Event: Soviet scientists establish Camp Vostok, a research base at the South Magnetic Pole in Antarctica, which is later discovered to sit on top of an enormous sub-glacial lake
- Event: An expedition into the Himalayas searching for the Abominable Snowman finds a hand reported to be a yeti's kept as a relic in a Nepalese temple. A finger from the yeti's hand is later brought back to England.
