- Fiction: A huge nuclear waste dump on the far side of the Moon explodes, sending the Moon hurtling out of Earth's orbit and trapping the people stationed on Moonbase Alpha on a one-way trip through the cosmos. (TV series Space: 1999)

- Event: The Battle of Seattle. The WTO Ministerial Conference of 1999 is interrupted by over 40,000 people who block the streets of Seattle to protest globalization. 600 arrests are made, and the police and National Guard use Tear Gas, Pepper Spray, Concussion Grenades, and Rubber Bullets on the crowds.
