Aachen

Basic Information

Aachen is the westernmost city of Germany. It was founded by the Romans when they discovered some local hot springs. It was the seat of Emperor Charlemagne. During World War II, it was the first German city to be liberated by the Allies in 1944, although it was largely reduced to rubble in the process.

According to a local legend, the citizens tricked the Devil in helping them with building the local Grand Cathedral by promising him the soul of the first living creature to enter it after construction, and then driving a wolf into the building before any human could enter it. Enraged, the devil gathered huge amounts of sand from the North Sea in a bag so that he could bury the cathedral and the city beneath it. But when he grew exhausted, he encountered a local farmer's wife and asked her how far it was to the city - and she tricked him into believing that the city was still a long way off. Enraged, he threw down the bag where he was, creating the Lousberg, one of the hills overlooking the city.
