ADX Florence

Basic Information

The ADX Florence is the only federal "Supermax" ("super-maximum security") prison in the United States. It is located in the city of Florence in Fremont County, Colorado and houses about 490 male prisoners, most of whom were relocated here because of repeated violence against corrections officers and fellow inmates in other prisons. However, it is best known for high-profile prisoners, some of which are considered national security risks, for whom security at even ordinary maximum security prisons was considered inadequate - including a number of terrorists, leaders of organized crime cartels, and so forth.
