Astronomers Discover Diamond Planet

Summary

August 25, 2011:

An article in the journal Science announces that astronomers at the University of Manchester believe they have found a planet composed entirely of diamond. The planet in question orbits a pulsar in the constellation of Serpens. It is extremely dense and orbits the pulsar very closely. It's composition appears to be largely carbon and oxygen, and it's density means that it is crystaline; in effect, the world is mostly made of diamond. The scientists believe this diamond planet might be the remaining core of an older star whose lighter elements have been pulled off by the pulsar.
