Basic Information

A Book of Shadows is a book that contains and details the religious text and instructions for rituals for the Wiccan religion or related or similar pagan belief systems. Equal parts spellbook and neopagan "bible". While the general concept is arguably ageless, the specific term "Book of Shadows" seems to date just to the 1940s or '50s.
