Basic Information
Cased Ammunition evolved from powder and shot ammunition during the course of the nineteenth century and is the current state of the art for the feeding of firearms, despite some experiments with caseless ammunition and the fact that some ordnance class weapons still use seperated rounds.
A cased round consists of shot, propellant and firing cap joined together by a cartridge - usually made of metal. The resulting round is weather resistant, relatively safe from accidental ignition and fairly easily handled by a semi- or fully automatic action.
Not to be confused with case shot.
