Basic Information
A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions.[1]
Defining exactly when the computer was invented is tricky. The ancients had things like the abacus, astrolabe, slide rule and the Antikythera mechanism. Calling these "computers" may seem a little odd, but they use some of the same mechanical computer concepts as Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine from 1837. Alan Turing came up with the Turing Machine concept in 1936, which lead to the creation of the first electronic computers in the early 1940s.
