I'd be suspicious of that "God checker" site … I've just been wandering around their middle eastern section and they've managed to miss the fact that "Ba'al" was a title, not a name and applied to a lot of Semitic deities, not just Ba'al Hammon. Makes me wonder what else they've missed out to be honest…

Forum category: General / Sub-projects
Forum thread: Mythological Creatures

I question the classification of this as a weapon … it's more of an engineering tool gone horribly wrong.

But we may as well leave it where it is for the time being - I've reparented it to chemical weapons.
Occasionally, (most recently with the Ape page) we have a visitor create a page without putting any actual information on it. I think the reason for this is that as things are, there is no obvious way to tell that the Blue Links go to pages and the Red Links don't go anywhere unless you already know. So people click on something they think is a link and it takes them to the "Do You Want to Create A Page" prompt.

Don't know how to solve this; other than create a bunch of pages to turn those Red Links into Blue Ones.

Forum category: General / General Discussion
Forum thread: Anonymous Posters and Phantom Pages

I've set this page to have 2011 as its parent page, and linked from there to here. I did so because that's the established pattern we used for Mathematical Model for Surviving a Zombie Attack, Zombie Attack At Hierakonpolis, and 5 Popular Zombie Survival Tactics. But I'd just like to go on record as saying that none of these are really "news" so much as they are "essays", "editorial pieces", "theories" or "thought experiments", and some border on "fiction". Essentially, if any of these were long enough to be a book, we'd probably still make a page about them, but we wouldn't index them from our news section. They're essentially only on our news/years indexes just because they're short and we know what day they were published. It occurs to me that that's a little weird. It's not like anyone reading these pages is going to say "I wonder what else happened in 2007?", they're gonna say "what other zombie ideas are on this site". Please weigh in if you feel strongly, or have any good suggestions. I guess I'm okay with them staying listed as "news" even though it's a little inaccurate, but if anyone feels strongly enough to move these things (such as making the parent page for all of them "zombie" or "zombie apocalypse"), I'd be cool with that, too.

On a totally unrelated note, the "Professor Riley" mentioned (and quoted) repeatedly in the original article is a buddy of mine in Chicago that currently plays in a Continuum game I'm running on Skype. He's been teaching classes on zombies in the media for several years now, and ends up mentioned in news articles quite often because of it. "In the future, everyone we game with will be famous for 15 minutes." :)

Forum category: Meta Forums / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Latin America and the Zombie Factor

I'm not sure why this concept came to mind - I was thinking at the time that it was an interesting one and that it ought to be found somewhere so I made a page to hold the thought whilst I went away and pondered it. I tend to find that thoughts hang around and make a nuisance of themselves unless I write them down.

Actually, I think it may have come to mind reading one of the politcal argument threads on SJG where someone had just made an eloquent and convincing argument against something that had nothing to do with the position his opponent had taken… it was a decent bit of rhetoric, but it left me wondering how it advanced his argument. And probably baffled his opponent as well.

I've plugged it into narrative tropes for the time being as it's a sort of plot related thing.

Forum category: Meta Forums / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Seizing the Dung Pile

TV Tropes Wiki makes the distinction between Characterization Tropes (which provide personality and flavor to a character) and Character As Device tropes (which explain the role of the character within the plot), and we've been following their conventions for our own formatting. See Character Trope for more on the distinction between the two. It is my opinion that this Abductor trope is more of the later than the former, so I'm changing the parent page.

Forum category: Meta Forums / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Abductor

Since this Trope page has no equivalent at the TV Tropes Wiki, it could really use more examples here. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any thing I've read or watched that made use of this as a trope or plot device, so I'm afraid I'm of no use in this regards. Could someone who's a little more familiar with the concept please fill this one in?

I also note that there are no links to this page from anywhere else. (You can test this by clicking "+ options" at the bottom of the page, and then "backlinks" on the menu that that creates.) Which means the only way someone will stumble across this page is if it comes up on the random page list (given 3400 other pages, that's not gonna happen too often) or this week while it's still on the short list of recent pages. Colonel, was there a specific page or topic that made this concept come to mind? If so, we should link here from there. If not, then we should at least figure out where it belongs on the big trope lists and link from them.

Forum category: Meta Forums / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Seizing the Dung Pile

Yes, that is a good resource. But "List of People Who Disappeared Mysteriously" is kind of a cumbersome page title. I like "Unexplained Disappearances" better. But what would it's parent page be? I suppose we could link it back to the main "People" page

Forum category: Meta Forums / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Joseph Force Crater

I think we ought to have a page for "Missing Persons" like Judge Crater, Jimmy Hoffa, Amelia Earhart, D.B. Cooper and Charlie on the M.T.A. Is there a specific Trope name to use for that or should I just arbitrarily make one up?

(Wait a sec. Charlie is more like the Flying Dutchman, which is a completely different story).

Forum category: Meta Forums / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Joseph Force Crater

Yeah, I was in a similar place, not wanting to over-ride others who might have a different definition. That's why this page consisted of a big section labeled "from wikipedia" and another labeled "from TV Tropes Wiki". Those two sites presented it very differently, and I just didn't know enough about the topic to take a side. I must admit, the majority of my vocabulary of magic-related terminology comes from the good ol' DMG and PHB. Since 2nd Ed D&D didn't use "Theurgy" very often, I was a bit uncertain of its meaning.

But since several pages on arcanawiki referenced it, I figured some sort of place-holder was a good idea. Thus, what we had. At the time I had myself on a quota for how many pages a day I was making.

Forum category: Meta Forums / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Theurgy

Might I suggest you work your objections into the article? I think you raise good points, and clearly have an understanding of the concepts involved.

If I recall correctly, this page was really intended as a placeholder that I just never got back to. There was some other page on Arcanawiki that mentioned Theurgy and assumed the reader understood the concept. Since it wasn't a term I commonly use and didn't have a solid mental definition for, I quickly slapped together a page referencing and summarizing Wikipedia and TV Tropes. I'll be the first to admit that the page I put together largely sucks… but I think it was better than leaving the other page incomprehensible to those unfamiliar with the idea.

Forum category: Meta Forums / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Theurgy

I strongly suspect the original fletcher post was just someone being cute. You ever see the very first version of our "Jason & The Argonauts" page?

I bet most of these 1-line tongue-in-cheek pages come about because people visiting for the first (few) time(s). Not knowing the color-coding, they click on dead links, and then feel obligated to type something to the page they just accidentally created. Getting rid of anonymous edits should prevent most of that. For the record, I don't see much benefit to continuing to allow anonymous edits. Setting up an account is easy and free, so I doubt it's much of a barrier to anyone that really wants to contribute.

I suppose it's possible, in the case of the Fletcher page, that it was someone just making an honest mistake, but I doubt it. I can't get inside the mindset that would mistakenly spell "war" with four r's. I'd think that'd be an obvious mistake regardless of primary language or level of education. But since you're giving them the benefit of a doubt, I'll also try to keep my mind open to the possibility that they had something meaningful to contribute but were battling with an incomplete understanding of English and a broken keyboard. If that proves to be the case, I'll gladly apologize for jumping to conclusions.

Forum category: Meta Forums / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Fletcher

I think we can delete that original text. Yeah, it reads a little bit like Old or Middle English, but it also sounds a bit like lolcat. Johan can has cheezburger. I googled "wit die johan" and arcanawiki is literally the only result, so I don't think it's a quote from any old text.

"Fletcher makes arrox. wit die johan and sends though art sell to knights for warrrr. he could peeesand ow freeman. salo make boww" sounds like someone having a larf at us. Even if it wasn't a prank, it's only going to confuse most readers. So we should delete it. If the original poster (or anyone else who reads this) has an explanation for the original text, they can always edit it back in, along with the explanation or attribution.

Forum category: Meta Forums / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Fletcher

I'm not sure about the idea that "Summon Magic" is a part of theurgy … some FRPGs might count it as such, but theurgy is generally about combining religious practice and magic. One does not generally summon one's deity and bark orders … even animist shamen who deal with pretty low powered entities on the scale of "things that get worshipped" tend to find it better to invoke respectfully.
Summoning, if it belongs to "real world" magical traditions at all, seems to be the purview of irreligious academic magicians.

Forum category: Meta Forums / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Theurgy
