Yes, I finally did get around to skimming over those RPGNet threads and considered gleaning some names from them to add to the People list. Haven't gotten around to it yet. I probably won't have time today, but maybe later.

Here is another useful site:

The Hall of Badassitude

Some of the entries are about fictional people, but a very large number are not - and most of them would work very well here.

I think this setup works well enough for the time being. I don't think we need to divide them further into specific places - we can always create individual pages for specific places and times (such as "Victorian England" or "Roman Empire") and add the relevant people to those places as well.

In fact, we should probably add noteworthy people to relevant country descriptions even now - for instance, all the people born in the United States should be listed on that page, too.

(Oh, and are you also watching those RPGNet threads? They are only getting more awesome over time…)

Yeah, I'm leaning that way too; although I think there's a valid use for categorizing them by type. Well, I'm going to take a stab at reorganizing the People page. Let me know if you think it works.

I'd vote for People by Historical Era

Ideally, we'd have multiple lists, sorted by all those factors, but that's biting off a lot for now, so I'd say in the meantime

I think the most functional use is to divide them by Historical Era, as the time and setting of the campaign determines who's likely to show up, anyway. Geography is a secondary concern.

I mean, yes, I can imagine (and would enjoy playing in) a game where any famous British person is a valid character, but it's much more likely that I'd set a campaign in Medieval, Victorian, or Modern England.

Likewise, a campaign set in Ancient Rome would mostly focus on Romans, but other historical figures of the Ancient World might pop up without it feeling like a stretch. Whereas very few games would be set in a timeless version of Rome and feature Julius Caesar, Michelangelo, Musolini, and a cavalcade of Popes.

I would love to add some more links to the People page, but I think we also need to think seriously about organizing the page into subdivisions. We already have categories for Historical People and Mythological People, (and theoretically one for Fictional People, although we have not established an official link for it). On the Bible page I have a sub-index for People of the Bible, and I put a similar list of people on the World War II page.

There are a couple ways we could divy up the Historicals on the People page. One is strictly by historical era:

Ancient People

Medieval People

Renaissance People

Enlightenment/Colonial Era People

Victorian Era People

Modern Era People

Another way is by geography:

American People

British People

Chinese People

Dutch People

etc. People

Another way is by type of character:

Warriors

Kings/Political Leaders

Explorers

Scientists

Religious Leaders

Criminals — (yes, that's another category we already have and should make use of)

Notable Women

I'm thinking maybe of doing it as a combination of the historical and the character type. The People page would be an index directing to the various sub-indices which would list the actual characters.

Does that sound practical?

This RPGNet thread has all sorts of suggestions for people who would be a useful addition to the list. It tells about historical people who would make great player characters.

And this thread does the same - only for villains.
