Basic Information

The Forestiere Underground Gardens in California were built from 1906 to 1946 by Baldasare Forestiere, an immigrant from Sicily in Italy. He had purchased the property unseen, believing it to be farmland, and then proceeded to build an underground cavern system when he discovered that the topsoil was exceedingly thin. These caverns had numerous skyrlights and catchbasins for water, allowing fruit trees to grow inside of them and reach the surface.

Game and Story Use

  • This makes a good template for agriculture in regions with less-than-hospitable surfaces.
    • It may also help explain the age-old question: How do all those dungeon dwellers get their food?
