Bestiality in the Circus Maximus?

Are we sure the Romans engaged in bestiality in the Circus Maximus? A race track seems a very odd place to do it…

I wouldn't put it past some of the more decadent Roman emperors, but I think they'd be more likely to have private exibitions for their personal entertainment rather than staging it at a mass-market venue. The Wikipedia article cited on the page does not mention public displays of fur-fondling in Ancient Rome and in fact explicitly states that mainstream Roman culture considered bestiality to be something that those pervy Greeks were into, and unacceptable to Traditional Roman Values.

My knowledge of Roman culture is pretty shallow, though. I'm sure someone can dig up something to prove me wrong.

And regarding Romulus and Remus, get your mind out of the gutter. That she-wolf was their foster mother for Jove's sake!

There's traditionally been some confusion about the bestiarii, who were in fact gladiators who fought animals … but anything else smacks of Victorian porn to me.
