Grimsby was originally a Trawler town with a large number of ships putting to sea. Unfortunately with the collapse of the fishing trade during the 1980s and 1990s it went through a period of high levels of unemployment. It was during this time that violence, crime and drugs became prevalent in the town. Indeed in one government report it was noted as being the third most violent part of the UK per capita.
A good example of a sort of physical onomatopoeia, or possibly nomnative determinism.
