• It is said that the Haitians made extensive use of voodoo to throw off their colonial masters, and in doing so called whole families of previously unknown loa from the other side, many of them malicious or downright demonic in character. It is also said that the persistence of these loa, and other malicious spirits from the time of the revolts, has lead to Haiti's persistent problems with crime and civil disorder and interfered significantly with attempts at nation building.
