Basic Information

In modern usage, a synonym for pistol, but originally encompassing the totality of small arms on account of them being weapons carried and fired by hand.

Also used by many sources as a synonym for hand cannon, especially in periods when these were the totality of small arms. Confusingly, "hand cannon" still persists as a slang term for large calibre and/or high powered pistols.
