Basic Information
Generally the top-most for front-most part of an animal, the head is usually the part that has the mouth and/or primary sensory organs (such as the eye, nose or ear). Many vertebrate animals keep their skull and brain in there, too. As a result, decapitation or severe head trauma are likely to be fatal. Subversions occur with things that don't keep anything particularly vital in their head and/or can function for some time with it missing (even to the point of picking it up and putting it back on).
By analogy, "head" can also be used for the controller of an organisation (head of works, Headmaster etc.) or the top end of anything - such as the head of a river or pass.
