Basic Information

The Headless Horseman of Canton is a ghost based in Canton, Connecticut. According to legend, the headless rider was a French paymaster heading towards Saratoga in 1781, with his saddlebags full of gold intended as pay for the French officers in the American army. He was then murdered and beheaded by an innkeeper in an inn where he stayed for the night. Later on, the inn burned down and the skeleton was found - but missing its head. Since then, the ghost haunts the old road leading west from the inn towards Saratoga aboard a "dark spectral stallion with fiery eyes".
