rating: 0+x

September 16, 2009: The British oil trader Trafigura has been accused of dumping large amounts of toxic waste off the coast near Abidjan, the capital of Côte d'Ivoire, in 2006. The company has denied that the waste was in any way harmful, but is offering a settlement with the locals. The company has also sued various news agencies and newspapers for libel which have claimed that the waste was dumped illegally and has injured and killed many locals.

Game and Story Use

  • This case can be a good example for the kinds of things an evil Cyberpunk Megacorp would be up to.
  • In a fantasy setting, merchant houses dealing in alchemical supplies might get rid of their waste in a similar way - which might have "interesting" magical effects (possibly including mutations on the survivors).
