The "Bavarian Illuminati" were a secret society founded in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany by one Adam Weishaupt on May 1, 1776, as an offshoot of the Enlightenment. It was outlawed in 1784 by the Bavarian government.
And from there, it passed into legend - today, "Illuminati" is used to refer to any ultra-powerful secret society which might control the world from behind the scenes. Many believe that the Bavarian Illuminati themselves continue to exist, that they are far older than their public record indicates, and any number of other outrageous claims about them.
Game and Story Use
- As the iconic conspiracy, references to the Illuminati should not be missing from any games that use lots of conspiracies.
- Even if it's just something that the local conspiracy theorist keeps on ranting about.
- As a red herring, maybe the Illuminati really do still exist - but they are nothing more than a bunch of rich, old people with delusions of grandeur who don't have nearly as much influence as they think they have and don't really understand the modern world.
