It's business as usual in Sacramento, even as deficit grows
rating: 0+x

Summary

July 11, 2009: Despite the rapidly increasing budget deficit of California - now at $26.3 billion - and the increasing difficulty of keeping vital services running and state employees paid, there is little urgency among the lawmakers of the state, who are largely preoccupied with fundraising as well as bills and other matters unrelated to the crisis. Attempts to focus on the finance of the state were blocked by partisans. The general population of California likewise seems apathetic to the current crisis, possibly numbed by earlier financial troubles.

It doesn't help that July 17 is the start of the summer recess of the California legislative.
