Basic Information

January is the first month of the Julian and Gregorian Calendars, and thus the beginning of the conventional year.

• Note that the year did not always begin in January - the Christian liturgical year (for those that hold with such things) begins with Advent, and the start of financial year in April derives from medieval rent payment cycles.
