Basic Information

The Klu Klux Klan is the name of a number of American movements and organizations that have advocated racism, white supremacy, and religious intolerance. They were originally founded during the Reconstruction era after the American Civil War and engaged in numerous acts of intimidation and outright terrorism in order to suppress the political and social influence of the freed black slaves, using disguises (including their famous white hoods in order to disguise their identities). This incarnation was eventually suppressed by the federal government. The second incarnation was active in the early 20th century and had a strong focus on anti-Catholic and anti-Jewish agitation. The third incarnation swelled in the 1960s in response to the Civil Rights Movement. Various Klu Klux Klan chapters exist to this day on the fringes of the American far right.

Game and Story Use

  • If you need villains your players can feel good about opposing, the Klu Klux Klan is hard to beat (other than perhaps actual Nazis).
  • Equally, like most famous and highly infiltrated subversive organisations, they make a good cover for a false flag operation… rumours persist as to how much of their headcount consists of genuine members and how much of undercover law enforcement and paid informants.
  • Ironically, may be useful allies in a pulp era Cthulhu mythos game - if black people and Romanists are intolerable, how much more so fish people and goat-thing worshippers? Helps add a useful layer of grey-and-grey to the setting where your only choice of ally is a racist mob.
