Basic Information

This list is intended to include all possible professions. If you think of something that isn't listed here, please add it. Being a huge list, it's of somewhat limited utility to some genres and settings, and may be hard to sort through. To minimize the difficulty in finding something on this list, it's probably best to keep it alphabetical.

For occupations subdivided by genre, setting, theme, or discipline, see the Profession page.

Some character tropes may occur on this list in cases where a trope shares a name with, or embodies a profession, as is the case with some Stock Characters. In cases where there's a trope that is just the name of a profession with "the" in front of it, that's listed as an additional link on the same line as the one to the occupation.

In addition, the various "List of …" pages linked to from the Professions pages have been used to round out this master list. Each of those pages will have it's own bibliography section with additional sources not listed on this page.

Game and Story Use

  • Some professions are inherently more exiting and dangerous, and thus prime adventurer material. Others require more work to make them fit into a game, but it is often worthwhile - "ordinary people" getting thrust into extraordinary situations is a common trope with many games, such as Call of Cthulhu.
