Meteoroid
Basic Information
A meteoroid is a smallish (a meter or less in length) rock, mineral, or lump of metal, floating in outer space. They are smaller than an asteroid, but bigger than a micrometeoroid.
When a meteoroid enters the atmosphere of the Earth it is known as a meteor. The heating of entry can cause them to ignite into a bright and flaming bolide.
A meteoroid that has struck the earth is called a meteorite.
Meteoroids are often made of iron, iron-ore, or an iron-nickel alloy.
