- In a superhero game, this might the result of some mutagenic substance that could also affect humans.
- In horror games, it could be the side effects of a Great Old One - such as Great Cthulhu himself - slowly awakening and warping the creatures that have some sort of affinity to him. Humans are likely to be next.
