- Event: British diplomat Benjamin Bathurst vanishes in Perleburg, Germany. Witnesses report seeing him "walk around the horses" and disappear.
- 1882:
- Event: Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta Iolanthe; or the Peer and the Peri opens at the new Savoy theater. The Savoy is the first public building in London to have electric lighting and the fairies in the opera carried wands with electric lights in their tips.
