Basic Information

The pauldron or spaulder was a piece of plate armour that protected the shoulder and upper arm. Some authorities consider the two names interchangable, whilst others consider that a spaulder only protected the top and outside of the joint, leaving the protection of the front to a gardbrace or besagew, whilst a pauldron extended further forwards.

Regardless, these were common pieces, often preceeding the developement of more complete armour (opinions vary as to whether Roman maincae were pauldrons or not) and sometimes appearing on pieces of munition plate well into the gunpowder era.
