Game and Story Use

  • Revolvers are absolutely vital in The Western.
  • If an NPC is carrying a revolver in the Modern Day or any era other than The Wild West, look out. It's a cue that they are a tough hombre.
    • Or, as per the Lethal Weapon films, just old - especially during the 80s and 90s a lot of police forces in particular transitioned from issuing revolvers as standard sidearms to issuing self loaders. Older officers often hung onto what they were used to. Also less well funded forces, and those which rarely used their pistols transitioned later than large urban units.
  • Per the Rule of Cool, Revolvers might deserve inflated or generous stats in your game.
  • A revolver is less likely that a self loader to fail when used in a vacuum, so they may be surprisingly popular in sci-fi campaigns as well.
  • On a practical note, if you're looking for a weapon that can be left loaded for months or years in a tough environment with very little maintenance and still fire first time, you're probably looking at a revolver.
    • So they're likely to form a high proportion of weapons still in service After the End
  • Also popular with divers as they don't retain water as badly as self-loaders and, with stainless steel parts, suffer less from immersion, especially salt-water immersion.
  • For quite a long time, revolvers remained more powerful than self loaders, at least partially to do with the difficulties involved in feeding larger cartridges through a pistol grip.
