Basic Information

The Navy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is referred to solely as the Royal Navy, never the Royal British Navy or the British Navy (British Royal Navy is acceptable if you need to disambiguate).

A very old navy and historically one of the world's best, creating Britain's Empire and also helping end the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

Today, it's far smaller than it was, but has:

  • 3 STOVL aircraft carriers (Harrier-capable), with two new F-35 capable carriers on order to replace them
  • An all nuclear submarine fleet
  • 4 ballistic missile armed submarines- the Vanguard class.
  • A new powerful destroyer class, the Type 45, entering service.

Colloquially known as "The Andrew", allegedly after a nineteenth century press-tender commander Andrew Davies who was said to be so zealous in his recruitment that it was as though he personally owned the entire operation (Also "andy davy" in Cockney rhyming slang).

Game and Story Use

  • A good opponent for pirate games.
  • The Royal Navy played a major role in the Napoleonic Wars and can be used for a sailing ship battle.
  • World War One and World War Two games are a particularly good place for the Royal Navy.
  • Can be involved in Cold War sub hunting.
  • The Vanguard class submarines do not need to launch codes from higher authority before they can launch- allowing the possibility of a nuclear hijacking- if you can find one.
  • The Harrier force is a very agile fighter and is perfect for ground support role, although it is only sub-sonic. You can improve it and use it as the basis for other things.
  • In the 18th century, characters can be "press-ganged" (gotten drunk and effectively kidnapped).
