Basic Information

A savanna is a grassland with trees. Savannas can have fairly dense tree cover; the defining factor is that they lack a closed canopy, allowing enough light through to support the grass — this distinguishes savannas from forests.

While the tropical savannas of Africa are the best known, savannas are found in many other places both tropical and temperate. They are often present in a transition zone between treeless grassland and forest, such as the oak savannas of the midwestern United States (between the Great Plains tallgrass prairie and the eastern deciduous forest).

Game and Story Use

  • The tall grass of some savannas can hide predators — ordinary predators like leopards, or perhaps something stranger…
  • Sparsely placed trees makes for interesting terrain in a fight. Just be careful with your fire and lightning spells.
