SpaceX, short for Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, is a space transport company based in Hawthorne, California. It's founder, entrepreneur and visionary Elon Musk, created the company in order to develop a low-cost method of reaching orbit and re-open human exploration into space.
SpaceX was founded in June, 2002. On September 28, 2008 it made it's first successful earth-to-orbit launch of its Falcon 1 rocket and carried its first commercial payload, a Malaysian satellite, on July 13, 2009. In 2008, the company was awarded a Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) contract from NASA to supply the International Space Station. Its first Falcon 9 rocket, designed for heavier payloads, was successfully launched on June 4, 2010.
In addition to designing rocket boosters, SpaceX has also developed a space capsule, the Dragon, to carry cargo and crew atop the Falcon 9 rocket. On December 8, 2010, SpaceX performed the first test flight of the Dragon, successfully launching and orbiting the capsule and recovering it after a safe splashdown in the Indian Ocean.
