Basic Information

Zoroastrianism is a dualist religion dating back to at least the 5th century BC. Its supreme deity is Ahura Mazda, the "Wise Lord", who is opposed by Angra Mainyu (also called Ahriman), the "destructive spirit". The two powers are also referred to as "The Truth" and "The Lie".

Zoroastrian views on the sacredness of earth, fire and water lead them to become practitioners of sky burial and, where there were insufficient natural high places to be found, to build the Towers of silence

Zoroastrians may also be referred to as Parsees (especially in India where the name derives from "Persian" - the traditional heart of the religion being in that country.

Historically Zoroastrian clergy were called Magi (for the mainstream cult) and Goetes (for those that followed Ahriman).

Zoroastrianism had a strong influence on Persian Mythology.
